Art Is: by Sahasra Sambamoorthi
World Premiere: January 2010

Directed by Jesse Newman, this short piece mixes the genres of poetry, music, dance, and film. The piece creates many layers, first exploring the idea of art and its experience for the individual. It also works within the boundaries of language, and how one can experience both regionality and universality within art simultaneously by translating a written poem into solo movement by dancers influenced by bharatanatyam (Sahasra Sambamoorthi); modern dance (Alison Schechter), and ballet (Elizabeth Case). Music by Elizabeth Burke and Arun Ramamurthy.
