I love summer intensive.
Whether you are 7 or 70, summer intensive is this perfect time to watch dancers and musicians go through a growth spurt. Something about the focused time for 2 weeks gets everyone on a totally different journey - suddenly the lessons you’ve been trying to teach for years settle in the span of 14 days. People become more introspective and inspired by their art. Healing happens in simple ways. Hard work is fulfilling. It’s one of the few journeys in life that feels so good even though it’s so hard. It’s so hard. But you don’t notice the difficulty. You just see and feel the progress of it everyday. You leave sore, unable to walk or with difficulty on stairs and wake up still tired even though you slept 9 hours to get to the camp but I’ve never heard a single student wish it was any other way. What opportunities in life provide us such excitement? The joy of working hard, of feeling intensity in the body, and yet desiring to continue to work hard. Desiring to come back the following week, then the next, then the next - because you feel you are showing yourself a new capability and way of being. In the span of 2 weeks, students prove to themselves they are capable of all sorts of new things. They learn life lessons that stay with them forever. They open themselves up to each other, and their teachers, solidifying a new kind of guru shishya parampara, of trust between each other. And what extra work is needed? Nothing. It’s literally the simplest thing - showing up. You show up tired, you show up sore, you show up and just get through it - no fancy extra try hard or bells and whistles. And in the simplicity of just coming everyday - you watch yourself jump. Your body is able to do new things by day 2. By day 5 you marvel at the capacity of your muscles to get better even when sore. By day 10 you’ve learned an entire new item and you just don’t know how. So - even though at the end of two weeks, my body is tired and my brain a dump from teaching nonstop for 8 hours everyday with little to no rest - I will show up for summer intensive and take the journey with every student that finds the time and capacity for it. Congrats to those who lived the 2 weeks this year and looking forward to the years to come! Sahasra Sambamoorthi 9/1/26
