Akshay Anantapadmanabhan, Mridangam
Akshay Anantapadmanabhan is an internationally acclaimed Carnatic percussionist with over 20 years of experience playing the mridangam, South Indian hand drum. He has studied under some of the greatest legends of the Carnatic music world. He is known for his versatile approach to music and has become one of the most sought after mridangam artistes today. Akshay has accompanied and toured with the top artistes in the Carnatic field across the globe, engaged with thousands of individuals in rhythm workshops, and has straddled Carnatic instruments into notable cross-genre collaborations.
​Vishaal Sapuram, Chitravina
​
Vishaal Sapuram is a renowned Carnatic musician known for his mastery of the chitravina, an Indian slide lute. Disciple of the legendary Shri. N Ravikiran, Vishaal began his musical journey at an early age, captivating audiences with his mesmerizing performances. He has graced prestigious venues worldwide and collaborated with esteemed artists across traditions. As an A-Grade artiste for All India Radio, Vishaal's music has garnered critical acclaim and awards. A dedicated teacher and innovator, he has trained students, conducted workshops, and developed the SvaraScript system for notating Carnatic music. Vishaal holds Bachelor's degrees in Sanskrit and Economics, showcasing his multifaceted expertise.

​​Sruti Sarathy, Violin
Sruti Sarathy
is a leading Carnatic musician known for her versatile violin playing, soulful singing, and captivating compositions. Her innovative approach blends Carnatic and Hindustani forms with spoken word, creating a contemporary sound that resonates with the South Asian diaspora. Sruti's groundbreaking experiments with the Carnatic violin have been supported by prestigious institutions, including a Fulbright Scholarship from the US Department of State. She has received grants and recognition for her work, including the "Best Violinist" award from the Madras Music Academy. Sruti collaborates with renowned artists and has performed globally, captivating audiences with her artistry. A Stanford graduate in French literature, Sruti's music reflects her diverse cultural experiences.

Embark on a vulnerable journey of a woman wading through the mire of societal expectations with bharatanatyam artist and choreographer Rasika Kumar and musicians.

“Goddess Kali, how is it that you are able to find freedom, admired and even worshipped for your ferocity, intensity, and liberated sense of self, while we, as women, continue to grapple with fundamental notions of equality?

Rasika Kumar’s talent lies in her creative choreographic ability to tell complex stories with a remarkable depth of vulnerability. Explore the theme of the body, confronting issues like abortion rites and the constant scrutiny of one's appearance. Dive into the complexities of motherhood and the invisible labor of women. This powerful performance searches for the ways we may break free from these bonds, built from the connection to the divine goddess Kali.

​Rasika Kumar
Rasika Kumar is a highly acclaimed Bharatanatyam performer and choreographer based in California's Silicon Valley. Trained under the guidance of her mother, Mythili Kumar, she began her Bharatanatyam journey at the age of four. Rasika has showcased her talent as a soloist and choreographer for the renowned Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose since 2005. Her choreography has been featured in numerous productions, and her performances have received accolades both within and beyond the Indian dance community. Alongside her Bharatanatyam expertise, Rasika has also trained in Odissi, showcasing her versatility and passion for multiple dance forms. She continues to push boundaries and make Bharatanatyam accessible to contemporary audiences.
​Sindhu Natarajan, Vocalist 
Sindhu Natarajan is an accomplished vocalist, composer, and Bharatanatyam dancer. She began her Carnatic vocal training under her aunt, Smt. Vasanthi Kannan, and grandfather, the late Sri P.V. Natarajan. She is currently under the guidance of her other aunt, Smt. Raji Gopalakrishnan. Sindhu has given many Carnatic concerts, as well as provided vocal support for numerous South Asian dance performances across the United States. In addition to performing, Sindhu is a passionate composer who creates music that blends her Carnatic roots with other genres. She has also studied Bharatanatyam under Smt. Mythili Kumar, Artistic Director of Abhinaya Dance Company in San Jose. Sindhu currently lives in the Bay Area with her husband and two daughters.

​Maya Rau-Murthy
Maya is a Konnakol artist, Bharatanatyam performer, composer, mridangist and teacher. Alongside Dr. Nalini Rau, Maya is the associate director of the Natya Anubhava Dance Academy. She has performed widely nationally and internationally, from Seva Sadan to the United Nations. She has directed, composed, and choreographed dance ballets ranging from traditional topics to contemporary themes exploring gender and social justice. Maya has choreographed multiple margams, taught over 40 students, and co-trained 10 for their Arangetram. She is also trained in flute, vocals, and is learning Chhau and the Karanas. She is eternally grateful for her gurus who have shaped her into the artist she is today: Dr. Nalini Rau, AR Balaskandan, Ranjani Venimadhavan, Ashwini Srivatsan, and Rakesh Sai Babu.
Aarti Shankar, violin
Aarti Shankar is a renowned Carnatic violinist, trained by the legendary Lalgudi G Jayaraman and his son Lalgudi GJR Krishnan. Known for her melodious and classical style, she has performed solo and accompanied vocalists in India and North America. A recipient of prestigious awards and fellowships, Aarti composes music for dance and collaborates across genres. She recently appeared in off-Broadway and dance theater productions. Aarti also teaches violin, conducts workshops on Western and Indian classical music, and holds an MSc. degree in Neuroscience focused on improving walking in Parkinson's patients.

Kathak. Lavani. Flamenco. Built in different times, different spaces, capturing different cultural norms and thought processes.

And yet…still connected.

From classical to folk, witness the journey of Kathak as it traverses across the globe, bringing us an electrifying blend of flamenco from Spain (Xianix Barrera), alongside kathak built from the Mughal courts, and lavani dance from Maharashtra (both by Aditi Bhagwat). Feel the vibrant energy as these distinct art forms collide on stage, alongside  live music from both the cajon and tabla (Mike Lukshis).

Enthralling footwork, intense musicality, soulful vocals, and the dynamic interplay between stylization and raw expression are markers of this show. Immerse yourself in the joyous celebration of tradition and cultural exchange in this one of a kind concert of dance and music.

​Aditi Bhagwat
Aditi Bhagwat, a prodigious Kathak dancer, inherited her passion for music and rhythm from her mother, Smt. Ragini Bhagwat. With rigorous training in the Jaipur style of Kathak, Aditi has emerged as a distinguished artist, recognized for her collaborations with renowned musicians worldwide. She has captivated audiences across the globe, from India to the USA, Australia to Hungary. Aditi's performances blend traditional Kathak with Jazz, world music, and Flamenco, showcasing her versatility. Her creative projects like "FlamencoKathaa" and "Crossroads" have garnered acclaim, while she has also ventured into film and online performances. Aditi remains deeply connected to the rich cultural heritage of India, which she celebrates through her dance and music.

Xianix Barrera
Xianix Barrera, a Bessie award-nominated flamenco dancer, teacher, and choreographer, celebrates bold and resilient female artists through her powerful and unapologetically feminine work. With a diverse dance background and a lifelong dedication to studying flamenco, she has performed alongside esteemed artists on prestigious stages worldwide. Xianix's recent production, "Mujeres," featuring an all-female cast, showcased her boundary-pushing approach while honoring flamenco traditions. She has received recognition for her artistry, including a Bessie Award nomination. Xianix's commitment extends to teaching and conducting workshops, nurturing the education of adults, children, and elders throughout New York City.

Mike Lukshis
​
Classical tabla soloist and accompanist Mike Lukshis has established himself as a leading tabla performer and educator in the NYC area. He is regularly sought after for his kathak accompaniment by artists across the US. With 20 years of direct, gurukul style training by Guruji, Mike is continuously imbued with the living tradition of tabla. Through his ongoing tutelage, Guruji has been preparing Mike to carry forward the Delhi and Ajrada gharanas, or schools, of tabla to future generations. He is a lead performer of several groups such as contemporary classical tabla ensemble Talavya, Pradhanica Dance and Music Company, and the experimental electronic trio TablaTun. As well, he is an executive board member for non-profit organizations Taalim Foundation and Anga Kala Dance Company.
Peter Basil Bogdanos
​New York-based percussionist/drummer with 20 years of experience. Worked with Digable Planets, Zhane, Bobby Previte, Orlando Marin, Annabouboula, Ronnie Spector, and more. Notable in flamenco, performing with NYC's major figures and touring with Noche Flamenco. Curates Flamenco lineup at SALA ASTORIA. Currently based in the Hudson Valley.

Why we are excited
​The sarangi is a deeply haunting instrument, one that requires a depth of devotion and understanding to bring out the melodic sounds of the strings.

Kamal Sabri, a 7th generation artist, has spent his life “serving the sarangi,” as he says, quiet and peacefully unwavering in educating audiences around the world about it. In this concert, he will explore repertoire from both the Hindustani and ghazal traditions - sometimes singing, sometimes playing sarangi, both together and separate, exuding prowess over the difficult instrument.

As an artist whose work has been in Grammy nominated albums who has also toured extensively around the world, Kamal says his purpose is to heal people through the vibrations of sound, making this concert ultimately a peaceful and soothing experience for the attendees.

Kamal Sabri
Kamal Sabri carries his family’s musical tradition forward to a seventh generation. He absorbed the rich Senia sarangi gharana from his father, esteemed Moradabad master Ustad Sabri Khan, and rigorous early training saw him gain respect for mature accompaniment slots with eminent Hindustani singers. He has represented the sarangi in the ‘Art of the Bow’ Festival in Geneva, as well as recording for the BBC and working with varied musicians including Ustad Zakir Hussain and as saxophonist Jan Garbarek.

Sahasra Sambamoorthi
Sahasra Sambamoorthi's passion aligns accordingly with Sridhar's; to reignite the fire of the South Asian performing arts within the US. Sahasra's knowledge started from her carnatic violin training at 5 under Smt Ranjini Swamy and Bharatanatyam training at the late age of nine – she debuted with her arangetram only four short years later and performing in India at prestigious venues such as the Krishna Gana Sabha and the Kartik Fine Arts in Madras 2 short years after that under the smart and able guidance of guru Smt. Kalaimamani Ramya Ramnarayan.

David Goolcharran 
David Goolcharran is a student of Indian Classical Music specializing in tabla. His parents first encouraged him to study dholak, but he soon discovered that his true interest was the tabla at the age of 10. David's deep love for music fuels his determination to continually improve his abilities and maintain a lifelong commitment to Indian Classical Music.

Anupama's concert may even include choreographic work on human trafficking built by one of her own protogee’s research and work with local organizations in California.

Anupama Srivastava is a renowned Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer. Founder of InSyncKathak Dance School, she trained under Padmashri Guru Shovana Narayan. Known for rhythmic virtuosity and graceful movements, her choreographies have garnered acclaim worldwide. Anupama is a Master Artist and grant recipient from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Her students achieve national recognition, and she collaborates across genres. With engineering degrees and a Silicon Valley career, she balances her passion for dance.

Anupama Srivastava leads InSyncKathak Dance School, renowned for prestigious performances worldwide. Notable appearances at Carnegie Hall, YoungArts Week, and international festivals. InSyncKathak students excel, including National YoungArts winners Vyoma Bhanap, Saanvi Ranadive, and Reva Srivastava. Embracing Lucknow Gharana style, they express, explore, and collaborate for cultural diversity.

From Ayodhya's inception during Deepavali, Abha unfolds with dynamic dance segments like Jathiswaram and a poignant Varnam conversation between Sita and Lakshmana. It reimagines Margam as a storytelling concept, seamlessly traversing past and future, while the narration engages audiences with thought-provoking exchanges. Abha's transformative power has stunned both rural and metropolitan audiences in India and is one of the most talked about productions of the last few years in the bharatanatyam world.

He, a dynamic young dancer, trained by Guru Smt Latha Edavalath, is now guided by Dr Sudharani Raghupathy. Known for strong Talam, abhinaya, and technical excellence. Diploma in Bharathanatyam from IKSV, Chattisgarh. A graded artiste of Doordarshan performed worldwide with leading dancers.
​Parshwanath Upadhye, Artistic Director,  Upadhye School of Dance
He is a versatile Indian classical dancer, trained under Guru Ravindra Sharma, guided by Prof. SudhaRani Raghupati. Natya Mayura awardee, the renowned male dancer in India. Winner of national awards, including Sangeet Natak Academy's Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. Top-graded artist of Bangalore Doordarshan Kendra. Founder of Punyah dance company and Upadhye School of Dance. Building Gurukulam for dance education.

Smt. Shruti Gopal, Artistic Director,  Upadhye School of Dance
She is a disciple of Smt. Padmini Ramachandran and trained under Shri Mavin Khoo. Head of Upadhye School of Dance. A graded artist of Doordarshan. Performed in prestigious festivals with the 'Natyapriya' team. Indian delegation to China. Conferred "Aarsha Kala Choodamani" title by Swami Dayananda Saraswati. Worked with Sankhya Dance Company.
Keerthikumar, Lighting designer
Keerthikumar is a sought-after Lighting Designer who works with several renowned dance companies, dancers, musicians and theatre groups across India and Singapore. His design works with STEM Dance Kampni, Punyah Dance Company, Narthaki.com, Omkar Arts Singapore and others have been critically acclaimed. He has presented talks on Lighting & Multimedia Design at important art seminars. Keerthi Kumar is a Kathak and Indian contemporary dance artiste. He is a Principal dancer and Head of Projects of STEM Dance Kampni and has performed and toured across India and over 18 countries extensively. He is also a Nattuvanar and a Padhant artiste. He co-founded ARTMOS (artmosproductions.com) through which he creates original choreographic works for educational institutions and works with artistes to create specially curated events, fastidious production design and their mindful execution.
