Master Class with Shambhavi Dandekar: Taking on Teental Farmaishis
Date: Sunday, May 24
Location: Online via Zoom
Time: 12 - 2 PM EST
Cost: $40 or pay what you can
Pick up the gauntlet and challenge yourself like the Mughal kings challenged Kathak dancers in their court!
The concept of Farmaishi compositions was added to the Kathak repertoire during the Mughal era. The king and courtesans would throw a challenge at the dancer which he would have to complete on the spot. This involved not only acrobatics, but also intricate mathematics (Farmaishi and Kamaali Chakradaar-s), literature (Badal, Bijli Parans) and abstract forms (Lom-Vilom).
In this master class, learn more about the history of Farmaishi by exploring unique, traditional kathak compositions, while enhancing your understanding of complex rhythmic patterns to add to your performance repertoire and to your overall knowledge of the artform.
Minimum required training: Awareness of the following forms required: Paran, Chakradaar, Tihai and/or 7 years in any Gharana of Kathak
Who this is for:
Kathak dancers looking to build practical skills and theoretical understanding of complex rhythmic patterns in Teental
What you will get out of it:
An in-depth understanding of a historic tradition and the ability to use the knowledge of complex rhythms to construct your own rhythmic patterns.
