No clue what the difference between hindustani vocals, Mridangam, Kathak, or Bharatanatyam is? (Or maybe the words are new to you, too!) Taught by our world class staff, introduce yourself to 4 different styles of Indian music and dance at Navatman. Each hour will be run by different teachers on staff and will contain basic theory and introductory material for each course we run here. |

Location: Navatman Studios, 38th West 32nd St, Suite #300 Price: $40 Time: 2 - 4 pm Sridhar Shanmugam’s 40 year world touring career spans a variety of experiences and has created a depth of knowledge of dance that is unparalleled. Dancers ready to think about their art form differently - or looking to gain deeper insight into their work - will benefit in any of his intensives. About Sridhar: Sridhar Shanmugam's passion has always been to create awareness and a truly appreciative audience of this unique and rich classical tradition; working ceaselessly towards placing Indian Classical dance and music forms on the world pedestal. This idea started from his exacting and intense training at the Kalakshetra school of dance (one of the most prestigious school of dance from India), and his later training in Rangoli painting, modern and post-modern dance, acting, choreography, stage lighting theatre & stage technique have only served to further this goal. Apart from his performing credentials as a legendary performer, Sridhar Shanmugam has taught extensively and conducted workshops at several leading institutions including Columbia University, New York University and the Brooklyn Museum of Arts. He maintains relationships with many of the top arts foundations such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center by serving on their boards and panels. |
Vocal Technique & Injury Prevention with Samyukta Ranganathan

You will receive an e-mail with instructions. If you have bought an in-person ticket and would like to shift to online for any reason, we can refund you the difference. Using Indian classic techniques integrated with scientific vocal methodology, Samyukta Ranganathan specializes in vocal analysis to identify and overcome your muscular limitations and unlock greater vocal range, strength and agility. Gamakas and microtone work will become easier through this short workshop, and you will be given exercises, tips, and general instruction on how to achieve a rounder and more balanced sound to your voice. Level: open level, for any genre of vocals! (especially useful for Carnatic, Bhajan, Ghazal, and Light Classical Singers) Schedule: Friday March 13 - 6 - 8 pm Saturday March 14 - 1 - 3 pm Sunday March 15 - 1 - 3 pm About Samyukta: Samyukta, trained under Sangita Kalacharya Bombay S. Ramachandran (Carnatic Vocal), and Pt Sanjoy Banerjee (Hindustani Vocal) is head of the Navatman School, and an awarding-winning singer who has collaborated with some of the best musicians in several genres including Latin, Jazz, electronica, hip-hop and pop. Trained as a Certified Vocal Teacher, and winner of The Brinda Repertory Centenary award, she applies an anatomical understanding to your vocal techniques to prevent and overcome vocal injuries and explore new reaches. |
